She auditioned at the SM Entertainment Casting System and joined the company in 2000. She had been trained for seven years as a trainee before debuting with Korean girl group Girls' Generation.

In 1998, Sunny entered Starlight Entertainment and became a trainee for 5 years before transferring to Starworld where she became a member of a duet called "Sugar" which never debuted. In 2007, she was transferred to SM Entertainment. After several months of training under SM Entertainment, Sunny debuted as member of Girls' Generation at the same year.

Tiffany speaks fluently in English and Korean and conversationally in Japanese.

She then danced in her audition show. In 2004, she was sent to study Mandarin Chinese in Beijing, China alongside with Choi Siwon. Her Chinese name is 孝渊 (Xiàoyuān) in simplified Chinese characters.

She was discovered on SM Casting System via the 2000 SM Open Audition. She then auditioned for the 2002 Korea-Japan Ultra Idol Duo Audition and won first place, marking her debut into the Japanese music scene with the band Route 0.

SM scouts spotted Seohyun as she walked on the street and offered to let her become an apprentice at the SM Academy. She is known for singing children's songs for her audition unlike other applicants who usually sing pop and dance songs.
